(AGI) - Teheran, 5 Oct. - Russian foreign minister Serghei
Lavrov reported that on occasion of last Thursday's talks in
Geneva a preliminary agreement was reached with the USA, France
and IAEA (the International Atomic Energy Agency) to enrich
uranium allocated for a research nuclear reactor located in
Teheran. "A scheme has been processed to allow the use of
already processed slightly enriched uranium in Iran and to turn
it into fuel in Russia". Lavrov was quoted by Interfax agency.
The fuel would then be transformed into pills in France or
Argentina and then delivered to Iran, ready for use in the
nuclear reactor. Lavrov stated that "soon there will be a
meeting of experts to carry out this scheme". This would allow
to meet the objective need to supply enriched uranium to "a
totally legitimate reactor which under IAEA supervision
produces isotopes for industrial medicine. The reactor is about
to run out of enriched uranium and it needs to be replaced". In
the meantime, Iran guaranteed that it will maintain a
'positive' approach to the next round of '5+1' talks on its
nuclear programme that is scheduled for late October. Foreign
Ministry spokesperson Hassan Ghashghavi emphasised that
"negotiations are moving on" and this proves that "there is
something to talk about in the future", even though he pointed
out that Iran's atomic programme has peaceful purposes. White
House national security advisor Jim Jones acknowledged the
importance of having "Iran now ready to join talks".
