(AGI) - Tehran, 18 Sept. - Not only in Tehran, also in other
Iranian cities there have been clashes between demonstrators
and the police, after the opposition had called on the people
to demonstrate against the re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
at the expense of the reformist Mir Hossein Moussavi in the
controversial election on June 12. Eyewitnesses have reported
riots in Tabriz, in the north of Iran and in Isfahan in the
south. In both cases the militia of the ultra-Islamic 'Baiji'
movement assisted the police in maintaining the order, beating
demonstrators and arresting many of them. The official number
of injured stands at two at the moment, and around ten people
were reportedly arrested. Today Iran celebrated 'Quds' day,
which means 'Jerusalem': each year marches are organised to
support the Palestinian cause. Today is also the last Friday of
Ramadan, the Muslims' holy month.
