(AGI) - Washington, 24 August - The US president, Barack Obama,
has approved the creation of a new elite 'squad' charged with
the task of carrying out interrogations of individuals who are
considered key figures in international terrorism. The team is
to be called HIG, or 'High-Value Detainee Interrogation Group',
and is to comprise experts co-opted from various intelligence
agencies and police forces. According to a report in todays
'Washington Post', which cites top-secret sources at the top of
the US administration, the decree to set up the force was
already signed by Obama last week as part of a larger strategy
aimed at relaunching anti-terrorism policies, purifying it once
and for all of the controversial practices which often
degenerated to excesses which not only led to rows with human
rights organisations, but embarrassed the United States before
its allies, Islamic or not. This damage was incurred without
even bringing the sought-for results. The newspaper highlights
the significant aspect that the HIG will have its headquarters
within the head office of the FBI, and that it will also be
subject to scrutiny by the National Security Council: this
means that the body will be removed from the control of the
CIA, placing it directly under White House direction.
