(AGI) Astana, May 26 - Since achieving independence, Kazakhstan has attracted direct foreign investments worth 255 billion dollars, said the country's president, Nursultan Nazarbayev. He was speaking at the plenary session of the Astana Economic Forum. "We have been able to establish effective international cooperation. I should like to thank all the businesses that have given credit to and had confidence in our country", he said. "Kazakhstan is a young state. We will celebrate the 25th anniversary of our independence this year. We have become one of the 50 most competitive economies in the world in a quarter of a century." Despite the economic crisis that has hit the country as a result of the fall in the price of crude oil and the Russian recession, Mr Nazarbayev stressed that "we are proceeding with industrial and innovative policy and investing in infrastructure, thanks to funds accumulated prior to the crisis." He added that the country had reserves, including those in the national fund, that "amount to 95 billion dollars, equal to 50 per cent of GDP". Environmental issues also play a part in the country's revitalising strategy. "The G-Global project is extremely important", added Mr Nazarbayev, who has suggested launching a Global Roadmap in order to develop a sustainable economy and rational use of natural resources, based on the Paris agreements.
